Nonprofits: Social Media is Not Just for Fundraising

This paragraph stood out for me:
When the time comes for you to ask for volunteers and donations, users may be more inclined to do so if they’ve already been socializing with your nonprofit,” Jones wrote. “Socializing, connecting, and engaging can motivate the human mind to support your cause!
It struck a chord with me because one of the most frequent mistakes I see social good organizations make is lack of engagement. They do not follow back, they do not retweet and they do not cultivate engagement with followers. It is a missed opportunity. Your organization’s Twitter account should not simply be a place to regurgitate what is in your newsletter. It should be a tool for you to connect and elicit feedback from the community.
Bascuas article made me think about the other ways in which nonprofits can use social media. Often times when I read articles about social media use in the nonprofit sector the emphasis is on fundraising, but something else to consider is its use in public education and community outreach. For example, take a look at The Trevor Project.
The Trevor Project is a national organization that provides crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth. They offer crisis services through their hotline, by instant message or by text. They also offer training and advocacy.
Their Twitter feed (@TrevorProject) not only covers upcoming events, but also shares information from various sources about issues related LGBT youth. Their tweets are aimed at those in need of their services as well as supporters.
