Macro Graduates to Participate in Macro Job Search Study

Diane Martell Seeking Recent MSW Macro Graduates to Participate in Macro Job Search Study

By Diane Martell, MSW

Hi. My name is Diane Martell, Associate Professor of Social Work at Rhode Island College and fellow member of ACOSA. I am conducting a study on the job search experiences of recent MSW graduates who completed an advanced macro specialization (e.g. policy, community organization/development, and/or administration concentration) while in graduate school. If you graduated from an MSW Program with any kind of advanced macro specialization between May 2015 through May 2017, please participate in this study by clicking on the link below. I also encourage ACOSA members to forward the survey link to colleagues or former students who meet this criteria.

STUDY OVERVIEW

Few studies have examined the experiences of macro social workers in their search for employment. Although most new macro social workers do find employment in their field (Pritzker, 2015), they also report barriers that present challenges to them, for example, difficulty identifying macro positions, misconceptions about social workers held by potential employers, and competition from graduates of public policy and administration programs. This study seeks to identify both internal and external barriers to macro employment using frameworks developed in the fields of career development and assessment. It is hoped that the information gained from this study will provide valuable information about resources and tools that MSW programs can use to assist their alumni in their search for macro employment. The Rhode Island College Institutional Review Board has approved this study, which should take between 15 to 20 minutes to complete. If you have any questions, or would like a digital copy of the survey questions, please email or call me at (401) 456-8628. Sincerely, Diane R. Martell, MSW, PhD Chairperson, MSW Program Associate Professor of Social Work Rhode Island College 600 Mount Pleasant Avenue Providence, RI 02908 dmartell@ric.edu.
